MATTER MATTERS

State of Matter

State of Matter — Justine Lambrechts

Autonomous Context  2021—2022

As a painter, the starting point for my practice was my research on materiality by translating sculptural elements to canvas. More specifically, these sculptures ranged from abstract still lives out of clay to carved stones.

This translation of a sculptural medium with its own tangeable properties and logic to a flat surface causes friction between media as well as a feeling of alienation of the painted subject itself. Characteristics of sculptural media become internalized by a 2D surface. Moreover, this estrangement is emphasized by enlarging their scale and putting them out of context.

In a practice where sculpture and painting are intertwined, I am building a visual world with an affinity for the natural, subtly infiltrated by the artificial.
